Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering
A distinguished history of education and research
The Department of Civil Engineering at Monash was formed in 1961. We have a long and productive history of providing quality education and research across the following core engineering disciplines:
- Construction Engineering and Management
- Environmental Engineering
- Geomechanics Engineering
- Resources Engineering
- Structures Engineering
- Transport Engineering
- Water Engineering
Today, we continue to actively pursue innovative and significant multi-disciplinary research to address the challenges for engineering in the 21st century.
Teaching and learning
Teaching and learning is at the very heart of what we do as a department. We offer eleven undergraduate courses (including double degrees) and eight postgraduate courses, with current enrolments of more than 1400 undergraduate, 270 postgraduate coursework, and 180 research students across three campuses.
We also offer a 2+2 undergraduate program together with Tongji University and Central South University in China. The undergraduate courses are primarily delivered on campus, and postgraduate courses primarily on distance education mode.
A major part of our teaching and learning activities is focused on student-centred learning, with emphasis on a problem-based learning approach, whereby students learn from group tasks working in a team environment. Undergraduate students also undertake 12-weeks of vacation work in industry to practise the skills and knowledge they’ve gained during the course. All learning is supported by well-equipped laboratory facilities.

Honouring and supporting performance, research and collaboration
Each year we honour one distinguished alumnus with the Alumnus of the Year award, and award the achievements of our high performing staff and students. We also sponsor several international visitors to our department every year to conduct joint research.
Please contact us here in the Department of Civil Engineering if you have any queries, or if we can assist you in any way.
