Yes, it is possible to ‘self-source’ an internship opportunity for this unit. Once you have identified an opportunity, it will need to be approved by the Industry Experience (IE) Team. Approval of a host is based on matters such as:

You're able to source your own internship in a location of your choice (in Australia or overseas). For further details, see the student-sourced placement information sheet (PDF, 0.71 MB). The Industry Experience (IE) team will also consider where you live if you request an opportunity through them.
The Industry Experience (IE) team are keen to match you up with an internship that meets your needs. For internship opportunities, students complete a comprehensive application form which records information such as: field(s) of study; career objectives; employability skills; personal goals; availability and restrictions. The IE team uses this information to match you with a suitable internship opportunity.
The investment of hours for a 6 point internship is a minimum of 80 hours. This is usually completed within 2 - 12 weeks although exceptions can be made for special opportunities.
Remember, there are also coursework requirements associated with this unit, and these will also make demands on your time.
Yes, all marks / grades associated with this unit come from a range of assessment tasks.
Yes. You can complete an internship overseas with our internship unit during the summer and winter semesters.
Students are not paid during their placements as they receive academic credit for their placements. However some organisations may wish to compensate you for project related expenses.
No. It is not possible to apply for credit for an internship or work placement after it has been completed, or after the point where your remaining hours would no longer meet the minimum time requirements.
No. You cannot enrol into this unit through WES. Once you have been confirmed for an internship, the Student Services team will enrol you. You may have to confirm your enrolment via WES after this has occurred. Remember, the Industry Experience (IE) Team are there to assist in securing your internship and enrolling you into the unit.
Try to resolve issues in the workplace to the best of your ability as this is part of the learning experience. However, if you believe you're being treated unfairly or that your placement is not going as well as expected and you can't approach your host supervisor about it, please contact the Industry Experience (IE) team. You can contact them via ie.eng@monash.edu or give them a call on (03) 9903 8866.
If your application is approved and the IE team identifies a suitable placement, you'll be contacted via email or phone and given further instructions relating to your upcoming interview. If the host is happy to offer you an opportunity, the IE team will email you confirmation of your placement. This usually occurs several weeks before the start of the teaching period you're applying for, but may take more time based on host availability and preferences.
You might be able to vary your internship dates depending on host availability. You must advise the IE team of any changes to your placement dates via ie.eng@monash.edu or give them a call on (03) 9903 8866 before the census date.
Generally, you'll start your internship at the beginning of the teaching period in which you're enrolled. The dates will be negotiated with the host employer. For further details, refer to Engineering Graduate Internships.
We take your address and your transport into consideration when matching you with a host organisation. Before attending an interview, please advise the Industry Experience team if the location is not suitable via ie.eng@monash.edu or give them a call on (03) 9903 8866.
No, other relevant work experience doesn't count towards your total number of placement or internship days.
It depends on the host organisation and the work you'll be doing but unless specifically requested, aim for professional clothing. To be sure, we recommend you check this with your host supervisor before your placement.
You need to inform your host supervisor about your absence as early as possible and you must inform them before you are due to start that day.
You may also need to negotiate your placement dates with your host supervisor to make sure you meet the minimum time requirement of your unit.
If you miss a number of days due to illness, you may need to provide a medical certificate to your host supervisor, depending on your host organisation's policies. If required please contact the IE team for assistance via ie.eng@monash.edu or give them a call on (03) 9903 8866.
