Pathways into Engineering

Detailed below are the pathway options for domestic students interested in admission to the BE(Hons):

1. The Monash College Diploma

The Monash College diploma program offers a pathway to the second year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree at Monash University for successful students.

Your pathway to University?

If you didn’t meet the requirements for direct entry into Monash Engineering, the Monash College diploma program could be the ideal pathway to university. This program offers guaranteed entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree at Monash University for students who successfully complete the diploma with the required scores.

Bridging school and university

Many students - whether they're from Australia or other countries, and regardless of their backgrounds, find that undertaking a Monash College diploma is the ideal bridge between school and university, as it makes the transition as smooth and simple as possible.

Monash College ensures that students can meet all the challenges of an engineering degree at Monash University.

For this reason, Monash College entry requirements are set higher than those of other bridging programs (although they are still slightly lower than the direct entry requirements for Monash University), with the results indicating Monash College students consistently performing well in their degrees.

How does it work?

Monash College offers the Diploma of Engineering Studies, Parts 1 and 2. This is a fee-paying program, taught on the Clayton campus.

  • Part 1 is equivalent to Year 12.
  • Part 2 is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree.

International students who complete Part 1 may be eligible for entry into the first year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree at Monash University. Students who complete Part 2 with the required scores are guaranteed entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree at Monash University.

Domestic students will usually require a minimum 80% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of one full-time year of bachelor level study (including the Monash College Diploma Part 2) must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements. All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.

Because Monash College operates three study semesters a year, and has small classes with strong tutorial support, it is possible to complete Parts 1 and 2 within 20 months.

Students may qualify for entry directly into Part 2. They can then complete their diploma in 12 months.

2. Transfer from another Monash course eg Bachelor of Science

To be eligible for a course transfer you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Have completed a minimum of one semester of full-time study
  • Be a current student who will be continuing their program of study and you have a minimum of one semester left to complete (in other words, you have not completed your current degree)
  • Have met the prerequisites for the course to which you wish to transfer
  • Have met the minimum average required to be considered for transfer (consideration does not guarantee an offer).

Your full academic history will be taken into consideration.

3. Transfer from another institution

To be eligible for a course transfer from another institution you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Have completed a minimum of one semester of full-time study in a bachelor level program
  • Have met the prerequisites for the course to which you wish to transfer
  • Have met the minimum average required to be considered for transfer (consideration does not guarantee an offer).

Your full academic history will be taken into consideration.

4. Single units of study – Monash (non-award)

Satisfactory completion of at least two units at university level can satisfy the minimum requirements for entry however, to be considered for entry into engineering, completion of further relevant units to equate for one semester of full time study is required.

Prerequiste single units

MTH1010 Functions and their applications (equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 Maths Methods) or ENG1090 Foundation Maths (equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 Specialist Maths)

PHS1001 Foundation physics (equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 Physics).

English - Completion of an ‘English rich’ unit may also be required in order to meet English Language requirements.

Single units incur full-fees as single units of study are not eligible for HECS-Help. Relevant single units of study may also be available for study at another university (full-fee paying).

5. Open Universities Australia (OUA)

OUA offers online studies in a range of disciplines with suitable prerequisite subjects in maths, physics or English. It is recommended that you complete at least four units covering pre-requisite requirements and aim for an overall minimum average of 70%+ to be considered for entry (consideration does not guarantee an offer).

Check the following units available through Open Universities Australia:

MAS110 Fundamentals of mathematics (equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 Mathematical Methods)
PHIX1037 Critical Thinking (acceptable equivalent to Year 12 English)
SCI16 General Physics (preparatory unit for SCI19 if required)
SCI18 Fundamentals of Chemistry (equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 Year 12 Chemistry)
SCI19 Principles of Physics (equivalent for VCE Units 3 & 4 Year 12 Physics)

TAFE Studies and Associate Degrees

Due to the structure and depth of our engineering degree courses TAFE study and Associate degree pathways are not available for Engineering at Monash and no credit is offered for completed TAFE diploma or Associate Degree studies.
