History of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Pioneering progress since 1961
Since its founding in 1961, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Monash University has grown into a national leader in engineering education and research. What began as a bold initiative within a newly established Faculty of Engineering has evolved into a world-class hub for innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.
Laying the Foundation
Monash Engineering welcomed its first students in 1961, with the Department of Civil Engineering forming soon after. While early planning leaned toward specialised research groups (e.g., fluid dynamics, applied mechanics), by 1963, the university had formalised its first four departments—Chemical, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. A fifth, Materials Engineering, followed in 1970. Environmental Engineering would later emerge as an interdisciplinary program supported by multiple departments.
Strategic Growth and Discipline Leadership
The department expanded rapidly in its early years, with student intake soaring from a small cohort to around 360 within a decade. Under the visionary leadership of founding Chair Professor Noel Murray, the department prioritised research excellence by investing in world-class laboratories for structures, geomechanics, and water systems.
Murray also set a strategic focus on four core areas: structures, geomechanics, water, and transport. By the mid-1970s, each had a dedicated team of at least three academic staff, creating strong, focused groups that gained national and international recognition.
An advocate of global collaboration, Murray regularly invited rising scholars—particularly from Europe—to join the department, fostering a lasting culture of international research exchange.
Guided by Leaders
The department has benefited from the leadership of esteemed academics whose vision helped shape its trajectory:
- 2023–present: Professor Ha Bui
- 2012–2022: Professor Jeffrey Walker
- 2008–2011: Professor Xiao-Ling Zhao
- 1998–2007: Professor William Young
- 1996–1998: Professor Paul Grundy AM
- 1973–1994: Professor Eric Laurenson
- 1964–1994: Professor Noel Murray
Campus Integration and Expansion
A major milestone arrived in 1994 with the amalgamation of the Caulfield and Gippsland Colleges of Advanced Education. This expanded the department’s teaching footprint and led to a phased integration of programs across sites. By 2002, all Civil Engineering students and staff were consolidated at the Clayton campus, streamlining the department’s structure and creating a unified learning environment.
