Summary: Australian coal mining industry is facing the need to measure and control carbon dioxide and methane emissions, which are emerging as major environmental and safety issues for the mining industry. According to the Department of Energy, Queensland, it has been estimated that current mine gas emissions account for approximately 4% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Australia. An innovative experimental study that takes into account the interaction of the major processes will be undertaken to develop a novel technique to accurately predict the potential paths for gas migration from coal seams during underground mining or sequestration of greenhouse gases.
