Department awards

These prestigious awards are presented annually to high performing students for their exceptional academic performance and commitment to their studies in Chemical & Biological Engineering. Many of our awards commemorate prominent members of the Monash community who have been instrumental in the Department over the years. We are honoured to be able to present these awards in their memory.

Also, some of our industry partners who work with us and support our students throughout the year, recognise the commitment and academic performance of our students. This valuable collaboration often leads to rewarding career opportunities with these organisations.

This prestigious award is presented to the student with the Chemistry Australia award for the highest achieving female student across level 1 units and selecting the Chemical Engineering specialisation in level 2 via either a single or double degree at the Clayton campus.

In 1991, the Department of Chemical Engineering instituted this award in recognition of the contribution made by its foundation professor, O E Potter, to the both department and the chemical engineering profession in Australia generally.

Selection criteria
- completed Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree with first class honours,
- completed the degree in minimum time,
- gains highest overall marks in the course.
A shared prize will be awarded if two or more students achieve the highest overall mark.
In the event of there being no first class honours graduates, no prize may be awarded.
The Yong Cher Biau Memorial Award is awarded annually to the student achieving the highest overall marks in the 3rd year of the Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree.

Selection criteria
- enrolled in either the single Bachelor of Engineering degree in the field of chemical engineering or in a combined degree having the Bachelor of Engineering in the field of chemical engineering as one component, and will have completed, in the year of the award, all the core level-three units for the Bachelor of Engineering component of that degree,
- achieved highest overall marks in the 3rd year of the Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree.
Selection of the recipient will be at the discretion of the chairman, who may direct the prize to be shared by candidates of equal top performance.
Bronwyn Adams and Karen Hapgood award is awarded annually to the highest achieving female undergraduate in Chemical Engineering. Bronwyn Adams was the first female chemical engineering graduate from Monash (1971) and in the state of Victoria. Professor Karen Hapgood was the first female staff member (2006) and Head of Department (2012-2016). Bronwyn and Karen are related - their grandmothers were sisters.

The award is provided by the generosity of Professor Karen Hapgood who was the former Head of the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, a valued and much respected staff member of Monash University, and a leader for women in Chemical Engineering.
Selection criteria
The selection criteria reflects the interests of both Bronwyn Adams and Karen Hapgood – their interest in the professional development of young women and their passion for a diverse STEM community. Achievement will be assessed using the following criteria
- Honours Weighted Average (HWA),
- Original contributions to chemical engineering research,
- Program leadership including student teams.
The length of time it took to complete the course or a fail in a unit at any point does not affect the student's eligibility to apply for Bronwyn Adams and Karen Hapgood award."
Supported by alumni, friends and family of the class of 1972 chemical engineering graduates, this prize supports students to achieve their full potential at university.
The Department awards two prizes annually of $5000, supporting students to focus on their studies and entrepreneurial ventures/student teams, alleviating the need to engage in unrelated paid work during semester and providing the students with experiences they may otherwise not have been able to participate in.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for this award you must:
- be an undergraduate student in the final or penultimate year of their studies within the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering enrolled at Clayton campus.
- have demonstrated participation in entrepreneurial and/or leadership activities and programs, e.g. student teams, Monash Industry Team Initiative, Access Monash Mentor or Generator (Entrepreneurial)
- submit a written proposal outlining utilisation of the prize – for further information and application process please email – chemeng.hod.ea@monash.edu
The Frank Lawson $1000 Prize is awarded to the highest performing second year student in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for this award, the student must be enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) single or double degree at Clayton campus and have achieved the highest WAM in the core second year chemical engineering units. WAM must be 70% or greater for the prize to the awarded.
Should there be no eligible candidate the prize will not awarded in that year.
This prestigious award is presented to the student with the highest overall marks in Level 3 Chemical Engineering units, enrolled in the Chemical Engineering specialisation (either as part of a single or double degree) at the Clayton campus.

This prestigious award is presented to the student with the Highest overall marks in level 3 Chemical Engineering units – female student enrolled in the Chemical Engineering specialisation via either a single or double degree at the Clayton campus.
