A classroom-taught unit where theory meets real-world challenges, acting as the crucial bridge between your engineering studies and industry.
ENG4802: Professional Practice (Student Teams)

Get hands on with authentic, real-world projects and challenges. Work in diverse, multi-disciplinary teams. Offered exclusively to current members of our Engineering and IT student teams. These members can be undertaking any degree at Monash.

Immerse yourself in real-world scenarios through an unpaid internship, applying your knowledge to actual industry challenges in a professional setting.
ENG4804: Professional Practice (Co-op)

What’s New? - Changes explained

Our Professional Practice curriculum has evolved into a suite of Professional Practice domain units. Now, you can choose from one of the following four units to fulfil the Professional Practice requirement in your program: While ENG4801 Professional Practice remains a classroom-taught unit, you now have the opportunity to choose from three additional units, each focusing on unique aspects of industry engagement:

ENG4801 Professional Practice (Curriculum embedded)
ENG4802 Professional Practice (Student teams)
ENG4803 Professional Practice (Industry Experience)
ENG4804 Professional Practice (Co-op)

These units will replace existing Professional Practice units (CHE4161, CIV4286, ECE4099, MEC4404, MTE4201 and TRC4002) in your course map.

This expanded framework allows you to align your industry experience with your interests and career aspirations more effectively. Whether you're passionate about working in student teams, engaging in work-integrated learning, or participating in our Co-op program, there's an option tailored for you. Single and double degree undergraduate students have greater access to participate in the above opportunities.

ENG4802 Professional Practice (Student teams)	1 and 2	Students who are part of an Engineering or IT Student Team can enrol via WES (Web Enrolment System).
ENG4803 Professional Practice (Industry Experience)	1 and 2 Summer A	Students must apply through the IE application process.	It is advised that you enrol in ENG4801 if you have applied for ENG4803. If you have received an offer for either of these units, your enrolment will be amended.
ENG4804 Professional Practice (Co-op)	1 and 2 Summer A	Students who have secured a paid internship opportunity and wish to enrol in Co-op Professional Practice (ENG4804) for an upcoming semester, can register the details of their internship by completing the confirmation of employment form. Both self-sourced and Co-op sourced internships are considered. Our Team will review your application and facilitate your internship enrolment. You do not have to be a part of the Co-op program to complete Co-op Professional Practice. Students cannot self-enroll in this unit via WES.	Please enrol in ENG4801 as part of the standard process. If you receive a Co-op internship offer and wish to complete ENG4804, your enrolment will be amended to reflect the unit. Students can complete the confirmation or employment form to notify the Co-op Team of the change.

Please note these units are not available to Software Engineering students. Software Engineering students must follow their current course structure.

FAQs

No. Professional practice experience must be undertaken at the same time as a student's enrolment in ENG4802, ENG4803 or ENG4804.
All Engineering undergraduate students who meet the prereqs and have not already taken their Professional practice unit (except Software Engineering students). Software students are prohibited from these units.
Non engineering students can enrol in ENG4802 if they are current member of Engineering or IT Team and they have the approval of their faculty to count the unit towards their current course.
- Sem 1 = 20 places
- Sem 2 = 30 places
- Summer = To be advised
No. All placements for Sem 1 and 2 2024 will be arranged by Monash Talent (ie no self sourced placements). The faculty will review this for 2025.
ENG4804 Professional practice (Co-op) will be offered in Sem 1 & 2 and over Summer. ENG4801, ENG4802 and ENG4803 will only be offered in standard semesters.
No, ENG4803 is an unpaid placement. The Co-op unit ENG4804 is a paid placement.
Yes. Please check the CPD website for specific details.
The Chief Examiner will monitor the enrolments and advise the faculty of any students who are enrolled in the unit who are not a current member of an Engineering or IT Team. These students will be discontinued from the unit
No. You have the option of enrolling in any of the four new Professional practice units: ENG4801 (Curriculum based) or ENG4802 (Student Teams) or ENG4803 (WIL) or ENG4804 (Co-op).

Enrolment information

The following FYP options are covered under the standard FYP unit codes (ENG4701 and ENG4702). You can enrol in these via WES (Web Enrolment System) in either semester 1 or 2, allowing you to commence your FYP in either semester. They are not offered over Summer.
Industry FYPs are not approved until all administrative components have been signed off (FYP Chief examiner approval, student and industry contracts and for IIP and Coop - the recruitment process). See below for application processes.

FAQs

ou can enrol in ENG4701 and ENG4702 via WES. The two units are enrolled as a sequence over two semesters near the end of your degree.
No. They are only offered in Semester 1 and 2.
You can use your completed ENG4804 Professional practice (Coop) placement learnings to undertake an FYP in that area. You can nominate your (Coop) experience to use as your FYP via the EOI form. If you are considering this option, we would recommend that you complete ENG4804 Professional practice (Coop) in the semester prior to commencing your FYP. ENG4804 is offered in Summer A, Semester 1 and Semester 2 for this purpose.
You are not able to use any other prior work experience to count towards your FYP.
Yes you can. You will need to complete the Self-sourced Industry FYP template. Please complete the template and follow the process for the Self Sourced Industry Project above.
