Graduate research (PHD - Melbourne)

A research degree is a truly global qualification; one that provides students with the opportunity to delve deeply into engineering challenges and develop solutions for the future.

We are looking for the brightest and best students. When we select our graduate research students, many factors are taken into account. Do you have a high score on your national graduate entry test (for example the GRE in the US, or the Gate in India)? Are you in the top 10% of your year level? Is your university ranked well internationally? These factors will all contribute to your ability to start a graduate research degree with us, and your eligibility for scholarships.

Become part of the engineering research community

If you are ready to develop specialist knowledge in your field and explore your potential to become a global expert, then become part of the Monash Engineering research community.

As a research student, you'll gain transferable skills that can be applied to a broad range of areas, including:

  • the ability to conduct research
  • analysis and problem solving
  • project and time management
  • interview techniques and presentation skills.

A supportive and stimulating environment

The Faculty of Engineering provides a professional, stimulating and supportive environment for our research students. Each student conducts independent research, but is also part of a research team under the guidance and supervision of experienced academics.

As a research student you will submit your research findings as a thesis, which will be examined by independent international experts. All students are encouraged to share and present their work at appropriate forums, nationally and internationally.

We have a range of scholarships available to graduate research students and a large proportion of our graduate research student cohort have received scholarships to support them through their studies.

Getting started

To help get you started, professional development is provided to all research students. With the guidance of expert supervisors, every student will pick up skills on preparing papers for publication and presentation skills. Monash Engineering also provide travel grants for attendance at national and international conferences.

Pathway to PhD

Students can be admitted directly into a PhD program. Depending on academic record and experience, some students may be admitted into the Master of Engineering Science (Research) degree. Those admitted to the MEngSci(R) can apply to transfer to the PhD degree after 12 months of study.
