Smart urban mobility in Ho Chi Minh City

Last week, Mr Trần Quang Lâm, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) Department of Transport, hosted the Victorian Minister for Economic Growth and Jobs and Minister for Finance, Mr Danny Pearson, for a technical visit focused on urban mobility innovation.
Accompanied by Associate Professor Dong Ngoduy of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the delegation toured HCMC Transport’s pioneering Urban Traffic Control Centre.
Associate Professor Ngoduy outlined how Monash University’s technology transfer is already improving traffic operations along 50km of key road corridors, with deployment set to expand across the CBD and the airport precinct ahead of its planned completion in December 2025.
The visit highlighted the deep collaboration between Monash Engineering, the HCMC Department of Transport and the Smart City Research Hub: partners working to address the city’s most pressing transport challenges.
Going forward, Professor Ngoduy and Minister Pearson plan to meet next year to continue discussions on the broader transport landscape, including lessons from major Melbourne rail projects.
