2014 Civil Engineering Alumnus of the Year: Mr Stephen Durkin

Mr Stephen Durkin

Stephen Durkin is the CEO of Engineers Australia, the peak professional body for the engineering profession in Australia, representing over 100,000 members locally and overseas.

Stephen has an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering from Monash University and early in his career, worked as a consulting engineer in a range of locations around the world culminating in being named EA's Victorian Young Engineer of the Year in 1993.

Upon completing an MBA in 1995, Stephen moved to the financial services industry where he spent the next sixteen years at National Australia Bank.  In that time, Stephen worked in a range of roles covering corporate strategy, change management, marketing and people leadership.  Key  roles included State Manager of the Retail Bank in NSW/ACT where he was responsible for over 2,000 staff.

Stephen’s career interest is in adaptive leadership.  Specifically, driving cultural change, creating high performing teams and running innovative and customer-focused businesses.

In his two years as CEO, Stephen has been leading a major transformation at Engineers Australia.

This change program has been focused on building a more contemporary organisational culture at EA, putting in place a program of member value strategies and creating a stronger external focus on behalf of the engineering profession, to support our new vision statement: "Engineers Australia is the trusted  voice of the profession. We are the global home for engineering professionals renowned as leaders in shaping a sustainable future.”
