2015 Civil Engineering Alumnus of the Year: Prof. Chien Ming Wang

Chien Ming Wang graduated from Monash University with a First Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering in 1978, and subsequently a Master of Engineering Science in 1980 and PhD degree in 1982; both also from Monash.
Chien Ming Wang is currently Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore, and Director of their multidisciplinary Engineering Science and Global Engineering Programs. He has a distinguished record of research in structural mechanics and engineering. His research publications include over 400 refereed journal and conference papers, with a current H-Index of 35. He is Chief Editor of the International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, and serves on the editorial boards of a number of other distinguished journals. His research achievements have won him several awards, including the Next Generation Port Challenge.
Throughout his 30 year academic career he has always given teaching a high priority, including serving as Associate Director of the Centre for Development of Teaching and Learning at the National University of Singapore for several years. In this role he conducted courses for young faculty members on how to teach large classes, how to prepare assessment tasks, and how to prepare teaching portfolios. He has won many education excellence awards including the University Teaching Excellence Award and the Faculty of Engineering Innovative Teaching Award. He also served as the Vice-Dean of Undergraduate Programs in the Faculty of Engineering.
His links with industry are very strong due to the applied nature of his research on very large floating structures. Moreover, he is a Fellow of the Academy of Engineers Singapore, Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Singapore. Amongst others, he was awarded the prestigious Lewis Kent Award and the Keith Eaton Award by the Institution of Structural Engineers for his leadership and outreach activities.
