2024 Civil Engineering Alumnus of the Year: Ms Meg Flanning

Meg Fanning

It is with great pleasure that we announce Meg Fanning as the recipient of the 2024 Department of Civil Engineering Alumnus of the Year. This prestigious award honours Meg as a member of our alumni community for her significant contributions to the engineering profession and broader society.

Meg is an infrastructure advisory consultant with a background in civil engineering. She is also a dedicated writer, coach, and advocate for women in STEM. A proud Monash alumna, Meg graduated in 2014 with a double degree in Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Arts.

Throughout her career, Meg has nurtured a lifelong passion for learning and exploration. Her choice to combine engineering with arts reflects her love of mathematics and physics, alongside her deep interest in music, history, and languages. This unique interdisciplinary approach has fueled her success in the engineering and infrastructure sectors, where she brings creativity, collaboration, and storytelling to the forefront of her work.

Meg began her career in Melbourne before moving to Sydney, where she contributed to major transport infrastructure projects, including the Pacific Highway Upgrade.

In 2021, Meg shifted from engineering delivery to infrastructure advisory, to use her engineering experience to shape the early planning stages of infrastructure projects, and to influence positive social, environmental, and economic outcomes. She is currently working with commercial advisory firm ConnellGriffin.

Beyond her professional achievements, Meg is committed to empowering others. Through her blog, Her Bold Universe, she offers career coaching and resources, inspiring emerging leaders in STEM to pursue fulfilling careers.

Meg’s work has garnered recognition across the industry. In 2020, she was named one of Australia's Most Innovative Engineers for her efforts in creating ConnectSTEM at Arup, and she received Consult Australia’s 2020 Future Leader Award.

Congratulations to Meg on this achievement!
