Why did you choose Monash?
I chose Monash not only for the reputation that its aerospace engineering degree has, but for the opportunity to study two degrees simultaneously. Both aerospace engineering and astrophysics have always been of great interest to me and both were degrees I was considering after finishing year 12, so doing a double degree with aerospace engineering and science seemed like the perfect choice for me.
What attracted you to engineering?
I have always been interested in how things work and how they are made, so as soon as I found out that engineering was the career path which would allow me to help design and build the very same technology I found so engaging I knew it was something I wanted to pursue.
What made you choose the specialisation/major you studied?
Choosing my engineering specialisation was one of the easier choices that I have had to make during my course. Any type of engineering or technology that was space or aviation related was always the most exciting and engaging topic of study for me, so I chose what interested me the most and pursued a degree in aerospace engineering.
Tell us about what you studied – What was it? What did it involve? What did you actually do?
The main focus of my course so far has been developing an understanding of the different systems of an aircraft, how they’re designed and how they’re integrated. Through this I’ve found that an understanding of many different specialisations of engineering is important. My studies each semester have ranged from the aerodynamic theory which lays the foundation for flight, to the aircraft structures/materials which hold it all together.
What advice do you have for prospective students starting uni next year?
My biggest piece of advice would be to get involved in all the opportunities offered by the university, whether these are student-led clubs or research teams. One of the most rewarding experiences of my degree so far has been joining the Monash Unmanned Aerial Systems team, which has given me the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge I’ve learnt in lectures to the hands on design and construction of drones and planes. Not only has this helped to complement and extend my knowledge of aircraft design and construction, it’s also been a great way to meet like minded students.
What do you hope to do after graduating?
After graduation I intend to continue with postgraduate studies in order to help me achieve my goal of a career in the space industry.
