Alan Finkel Technology and Design Building

The Alan Finkel Technology and Design Building at Monash University is a flagship, five-storey facility designed to revolutionize the way engineering is taught and practiced. Named in honor of Dr. Alan Finkel—one of Australia’s most distinguished engineers, scientists, and former Chief Scientist—the building is a living testament to Monash's commitment to innovation, practical learning, and global impact.
As one of the world's most energy-efficient and technologically advanced teaching buildings of its type, it functions as both a hyper-modern learning ecosystem and a vibrant community hub for the next generation of creators.

Next-Gen collaborative spaces
Moving away from traditional, rigid lecture halls, the building houses more than 30 dynamic learning spaces. This includes a massive, interactive tiered collaborative space capable of accommodating 360 people, explicitly engineered to foster team-based problem solving and active peer-to-peer discussion.

Interdisciplinary collaboration
The layout of the building is intended to promote interaction between different engineering disciplines, fostering an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving. This encourages students from diverse engineering backgrounds to collaborate, share ideas, and innovate solutions that address complex challenges in today's world.

Research opportunities
The facility provides a vibrant environment for undergraduate and postgraduate research, encouraging students to explore innovative projects that can have a significant impact in various fields such as renewable energy, smart technology, and healthcare engineering.

Community engagement
Besides serving as a hub for student learning and innovation, the Alan Finkel Technology and Design Building is designed to engage with the wider community. This includes outreach programs and workshops that invite industry professionals and local stakeholders to collaborate with students, ensuring that the engineering solutions developed are relevant and beneficial to society.
