A/Professor Liton (MD) Kamruzzaman
Research Interests
Liton is ranked as the TOP RESEARCHER in Urban Studies and Planning in Australia consecutively in 2021 and 2023. He is also recognised as the top 3 most impactful researcher globally in transport and land use planning. His research focuses on developing a deeper understanding between transport and urban planning. He tries to identify the underlying causes of travel behaviour and the role of cities in promoting sustainable travel choices. He employs data driven approaches, uses field surveys to collect data, and analyses large panel datasets to test classic urban, economic, and behavioural theories to better understand and generate insights to inform theory as well as real world decision making in his fields of research.
Liton has established a well-funded program of published research that identifies cross-sectional and longitudinal evidence base on the bidirectional relationship between transportation and urban planning. His areas of expertise include land use planning, travel behaviour, transport emissions modelling, econometrics, transport planning, GIS and Remote Sensing (RS). These skillsets together with his multidisciplinary academic background (PhD in Transportation, MSc in Geoinformation Science, and bachelor degree in Urban Planning) enable him to conduct cross-disciplinary research, with a greater focus on the application of spatial/data science techniques in transportation and urban planning. His current research activities can broadly be categorised in the following three areas:
a) The role of urban planning to promote sustainable travel behaviour;
b) Envisioning the future of transportation and cities; and
c) Computer vision and big data analytics for transportation/urban planning.
