On Tuesday 6 September, 6PM (AEST) we hosted our 2022 Whyte Lecture which honoured the life and legacy of recordkeeping and archival pioneer, Dr Frank Upward.
Dr Upward described himself as 'a scholarly misfit' but was widely-regarded by practitioners as the best example of a scholar. His writings were steeped in philosophy and he made connections and derived parallels to currents of thought from across the twentieth century.
Yet, his work was 'real world' and located solidly in experience-based practical knowledge. He didn’t quite fit any moulds and was renowned for the originality of his ideas and insights.
Dr Upward’s name is synonymous with the Records Continuum Model – a detailed and holistic way to think about the nature, role, use and life of records. It also explores how they constantly interact across four dimensions of creation, capture, organisation and pluralisation. Through this, and further explorations of spacetime dynamics, he presented the world with a new recordkeeping, archiving and informatics paradigm.
