Professor Scott Tyo appointed Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering

Scott Tyo

The Faculty of Engineering at Monash University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Scott Tyo as Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, commencing in January 2022.

Professor Tyo joins Monash from UNSW Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), where he was the Head of the School of Engineering & Information Technology, a position he held from 2015 to 2021. Previously, he completed his PhD degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and then served in the US Air Force as a research and development engineer. He was a military faculty member at the US Naval Postgraduate School before leaving the Air Force to take up a position at the University of New Mexico, and later the University of Arizona.

Professor Tyo’s research focuses on applied electromagnetics and optics, with a special interest in applying technology to solve problems in defence and security. He has developed extensive partnerships with the US Department of Defense and has also built strong local ties to the Australian defence industry for his work in microwave and optical systems.

Professor Tyo is a Fellow of the IEEE, SPIE, and Optica (formerly the Optical Society of America), and is currently an elected member of the Board of Directors of SPIE. He was previously an officer and Administrative Committee member of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. He was the recipient of the 2014 SPIE GG Stokes Award for his work in optical polarisation measurement, an Associate Editor of Applied Optics (2006- 2010) and a Topical Editor for the IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters (2004-2008). He is currently Editor-In-Chief of the SPIE Field Guide book series.

Professor Tyo is married to Professor Liz Ritchie, and the two have a long-standing interdisciplinary collaboration in applied atmospheric remote sensing that blends his interest in imaging and sensing with her expertise in tropical cyclone dynamics. Professor Ritchie will also be taking up a joint appointment between the Department of Civil Engineering and the School of Earth, Atmosphere and the Environment in the Faculty of Science.

“I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Head of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, and I can't wait to join the outstanding group of academics that are in place already,” said Professor Tyo. “Together, we will have a great opportunity to grow the department and build our research, education, and industry partnerships.”

Dean of Engineering, Professor Elizabeth Croft, says that Professor Tyo was selected after an extensive international search. “We are delighted to welcome Professor Tyo to Monash Engineering,” she said. “He is a distinguished scholar with an excellent track record of successful engagement with industry and his appointment will particularly accelerate our initiatives in growth areas such as defence and space. We also warmly welcome Professor Ritchie to the faculty.”
