Women’s mentoring program sparks connections and careers

Monash Engineering’s Women in Engineering (WIE) Mentoring program has been launched for 2024 with a welcome and networking event for mentors and mentees.

The 18-week program connects current women Monash Engineering students with matched mentors: engineering graduates now working in industry.

Returning mentor Sarah Moorfoot, a mechanical engineer turned patent and trade mark attorney, said she wished a similar mentoring program had existed when she was a student and urged mentees to take any opportunities they could to connect and grow their networks.

"Having other women who can share their experiences on the same journey as you are going on is very important, and you never know what can come out of it," Sarah said.

Recent mentee Teresa Carrasco, who is undertaking postgraduate studies in chemical engineering, advised fellow mentees to set clear goals and be proactive in what she described as a mentee-driven program.

"The more you put into it, the more you will gain from it," Teresa advised.

Mechanical engineer and returning mentor Rachel Michaud said she was delighted to be taking part in the program again.

"I loved last year so much!" said Rachel. "Beginning with the welcome event, I connected with so many women I had so much in common with, and came away thinking 'I need more of this'!"
