Monash-led study examines AI-driven IVF

Artificial intelligence and automation could help reshape the future of IVF, according to a major international review published in Nature Reviews Bioengineering.
Led by Monash University PhD candidate Jenny Lorimer under the supervision of Associate Professor Reza Nosrati, the review explores how AI and microscale engineering technologies are beginning to transform key stages of assisted reproduction, including sperm preparation, egg handling, embryo selection and cryopreservation.
“AI and automation are opening the door to a new generation of IVF technologies that are not just automated versions of manual techniques, but redesigned systems that overcome current limitations,” Jenny said.
The review highlights how AI-enabled systems could improve precision, standardise workflows and support clinical decision-making, while helping embryologists deliver more consistent outcomes for patients.
Associate Professor Nosrati said the potential extends beyond improving existing laboratory processes. “The opportunity is not just to automate existing workflows, but to redesign them to better reflect the complexity of reproductive biology,” he explained.
“Working closely with embryologists allows us to build systems that are safer, more adaptive and better aligned with clinical practice.”
The multidisciplinary collaboration brings together researchers from Monash Engineering, Monash IVF Group and the University of Melbourne, illustrating the growing role of engineering innovation in advancing reproductive healthcare.
