Distinguished Honour Supports Australia-Germany Research Alliance
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Research Awards to internationally renowned academics each year.
In recognition of his academic record, Professor Ranjith Pathegama Gamage of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has received a prestigious Humboldt Research Award.
Nominated by Professor Dr Florian Amann, Chair of Engineering Geology at RWTH Aachen University, Professor Ranjith began collaborating with RWTH Aachen in 2008 - an engagement that shaped his research and led to his inaugural ARC Future Fellowship in 2009.
The Humboldt Award will support this ongoing research collaboration and focus on:
- scientific exchange and bilateral research initiatives
- joint workshops and PhD/postdoctoral exchange programs
- building enduring Australia – Germany partnerships in areas of shared strategic importance
The alliance will drive high-impact research in geothermal energy and CO₂ sequestration, contributing to Germany’s clean energy transition and reinforcing Monash University’s leadership in global sustainability.
It will also open up joint funding opportunities through German and European Union research agencies, while expanding international research networks in critical minerals, low-carbon technologies, and net-zero energy systems.
Receiving this award during a Fulbright Scholar year adds extra significance for Professor Ranjith, highlighting the global relevance of his work and a shared commitment to innovative, real-world solutions.
