Global sustainability award for algae innovation

For their project “Turning algae into the future of clean industry”, a student team from Monash University Malaysia has been awarded 1st place in the 4th edition of the global "Universities for Goal 13 Competition."

Team members Shafeeq Ahmed Syed Ali, Manuja Dayanath (WCMS members) and Morgan Loh were guided by Dr Saman Ilankoon of the Monash Malaysia School of Engineering. Their project was recognised for:

  • Integrating machine learning into biorefinery operations
  • A strong circular economy approach
  • Balancing environmental impact with economic viability
  • Clear opportunities for industry application

Jurors Mr Maximilian Schnippering (Head of Sustainability, Siemens Energy) and Ms Julie Topf (Climate Program Manager, SDSN) commended the project’s innovation, feasibility and potential to drive real-world impact.

The award was bestowed last Friday at a ceremony in New York where the team’s project video (was showcased as they presented their vision for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Professor John Thwaites AM, Chair of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute and Climateworks Centre, also attended the ceremony in New York. Of this achievement he said “Congratulations to the team and staff from Monash University Malaysia and Monash Engineering…I was pleased to accept the award in New York today on behalf of the students.”
