Recognition for research on sustainable cities framework
At the recent 2025 Planning Institute of Australia (Victoria) Awards for Planning Excellence, Associate Professor Liton Kamruzzaman of Civil and Environmental Engineering received the Planning Research Excellence Award for his ground-breaking research, “Towards a Theory of Sustainable City Sizes.”
The Honourable Sonya Kilkenny MP, Minister for Planning, congratulated Associate Professor Kamruzzaman, saying "These awards showcase the highest standards in planning... Your work reflects the excellence these awards seek to honour and strengthens the places where Victorians live, work and connect."
Associate Professor Kamruzzaman's research proposes a new framework for estimating the population a city can sustainably support.
It offers insights that could guide government planning, improve housing strategies and generate significant economic and environmental benefits, potentially saving $5.3 billion in annual rent and reducing multi-vehicle dependency for hundreds of thousands of households.
