Sustainable lithium extraction from salt lakes

The Australian Research Council (ARC) Early Career Industry Fellowships scheme supports academic researchers in building careers in industry, and industry-based researchers in transitioning to university settings. It promotes two-way mobility and fosters skills in research collaboration, translation and commercialisation.
Monash Engineering congratulates Dr Zhikao Li from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering who has been awarded ARC funding of $509,109. In partnership with ElectraLith, Dr Li will lead "Advanced Membrane Engineering for Direct Lithium Extraction from Salt Lakes."
This research project will focus on developing innovative, loose-structured nanofiltration membranes using advanced fabrication techniques to enhance lithium and magnesium extraction from salt lakes. It aims to deepen understanding of ion transport within tailored polymer frameworks and deliver improved technologies for direct lithium extraction.
With global demand for lithium accelerating, this project supports sustainable resource use and positions Australia as a leader in clean energy materials, helping to reduce environmental impact and drive economic prosperity.
