Fuel dependence under scrutiny

Stuart Walsh - Climate Comm briefing

Australia has been warned to prepare for potential fuel disruptions, as experts caution that the nation’s reliance on global supply chains leaves it exposed.

Speaking at a recent briefing, Associate Professor Stuart Walsh of Monash Civil and Environmental Engineering noted that “Australia could face significant disruption if a genuine fuel shortage were to occur,” pointing to constrained global supply and rising prices already shaping the outlook.

He highlighted the fragility of international energy arrangements, warning that in times of pressure, countries may prioritise their own needs over export commitments which raises serious questions about Australia’s energy security.

Associate Professor Walsh also highlighted the complexity of any response, suggesting that decisions around rationing would require careful consideration of “how limited supply should be allocated across industries, essential services and communities.”
