Zafira Madzin

Dr Zafira Madzin is a dedicated environmental scientist and postdoctoral researcher at the International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Her pioneering work focuses on tackling two of the world’s most pressing challenges, water pollution and sustainability, through research on emerging pollutants such as microplastics and heavy metals.

Zafira has led major research projects, including national and industry-funded grants investigating pollution in aquatic ecosystems and developing cleaner water technologies. Her expertise has earned her international recognition, including selection as a visiting scholar at M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University, where she was the only female water engineering expert invited to advise on solutions to severe water scarcity, an inspiring example of leadership.

Dr. Zafira has also pioneered the use of AI in environmental engineering, setting a precedent for data-driven, smart engineering solutions in water management.

Beyond her research achievements, Zafira is an outstanding advocate for women in STEM. She regularly mentors students and shares her story at schools and STEM forums, encouraging young women to pursue careers in engineering and environmental science. She is a strong voice for inclusivity in academia, pushing for better support systems for women in research, including family-friendly policies, flexible work arrangements, and equal opportunities for leadership roles. Her journey, completing her PhD while caring for a premature baby in intensive care, speaks volumes about her resilience and determination.
