Andrew Young
Structural engineer with a sporty streak

Recently relocated to London, Andrew Young (BCivEng(Hons) 2012) has scored a job as Senior Engineer at Arup, a multinational professional services firm. Arup describes itself as “the creative force at the heart of many of the world’s most prominent projects in the built environment and across industry”. And Andrew has now become an integral part of this.
No doubt his previous experience as a structural engineer has stood Andrew in good stead. He has managed projects and led teams. He has worked for various companies, including AW Maritime and Hatch, in road, rail and maritime structural design, as well as on-site project engineering.
“I can adapt and provide practical solutions to client and project requirements to deliver structural design and construction projects,” says Andrew. “Before moving to London, I led a team of engineers in completing structural inspections, assessments, remediation design and asset management on rail and road bridge structures throughout Australia.”
Additionally, Andrew has an outstanding academic record. Not only did he graduate from Monash with first class honours, he was awarded Golden Key International Honour Society membership – only the top 15% of university students receive this invitation. Also, on an exchange program, Andrew completed the first semester of his final year at the University of Sheffield in the UK.
“My passion lies in efficiently transferring design into construction,” shares Andrew. “I wish to advance my skillset in design and construct projects by working within a team progressing a design from its early stages into a safe, constructible and efficient solution for both client and constructor.”
When not pursuing his professional passion, Andrew casually enjoys golf, tennis and basketball. And he’s totally devoted to football. During his last three years in Australia, he was Senior Captain and committee member of the Monash Blues Australian Rules Football Club. All great ‘cross-training’ for a successful engineering career!
