Dr Haque is a tenured-track full-time teaching and research staff (Level C), an elected Fellow of the Institution of Engineers and an Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Civil Engineering. He has been conducting research in (i) Non-destructive characterisation of materials using high-resolution X-Ray CT imaging; (ii) microstructural behaviour of soils subjected to insitu loading and (iii) carbon-sequestration. His works on the microstructural evolution of soils subjected to insitu loading and improvement of soft acid sulphate soils using industrial by-products are of significant contributions. He is the recipient of many industry and national competitive grants, valued at $5M in total (2-ARC Discovery, 2-ARC Linkage, 1-Rail CRC and 2-large Industry projects). He has been successful in securing 3-large ARC LIEF grants of $3.8M in total to establish world-class laboratory facilities at Monash, including a high-resolution X-Ray CT Facility ($1.2M). He has published many papers in reputed journals and conferences. He has supervised successfully many PhDs and Masters students as main and associate supervisors.

Dr Haque worked as the Director of Teaching of Civil Engineering (2014-2015) and thus provided leadership to develop quality learning & teaching practices through the development of new policies and procedures. He was the Program Leader of the off-campus Master of Infrastructure Engineering & Management program (2003-2017). He has been teaching CIV4249-Foundation Engineering, CIV4212-Civil Engineering Practice 4 at undergraduate level using the Real-Project-Based learning approach.

Research Projects

Current projects

An Advanced, Macro-scale, hydro-thermo-mechanical Testing Chamber for sustainable deep geological applications.

The deep Earth offers significant promise for enhanced sustainability, including novel options for resource
development and pollutant storage. A firm understanding of expected engineering behaviour is key to
successful ultilisation of the deep Earth. Engineers and geologists from nine leading Australian universities
are developing a new large-scale device capable of recreating ground conditions at depths up to 13km. The
Advanced Macro-scale Testing Chamber (AMTC) will be used to study hydro-thermo-mechanical aspects of
deep geological applications, including carbon dioxide storage, enhanced geothermal energy and
unconventional hydrocarbon reservoir development. The AMTC will also have capacity to study mechanisms
leading to earthquakes.

Long-term mechanical-flow performance of an enhanced geothermal reservoir.

Extraction of heat (geothermal energy) from deep earth is promising but inefficient so far. Heat is transferred when
huge quantities of water are pumped through; but recovery of heat is low and much water is lost. This Project
researches carbon dioxide (CO2) as an alternative to water. There are excellent prospects of relatively efficient
recovery. And any loss of CO2 as a working fluid in deep-earth geothermal reservoirs is beneficial: it is permanent
sequestration of carbon. The Project addresses fundamental questions on the evolution of fluid-flow systems,
recovery rate, long-term injectability, and mechanical-flow behaviour. Findings are expected to provide practical
information on the geomechanical viability of this green power option.

Geological sequestration of carbon dioxide in deep saline aquifers: coupled flow-mechanical considerations.

This project aims to evaluate the feasibility of large scale storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep saline aquifers. Currently the ease with which CO2 can be pumped into these rock strata, and their storage capacity are uncertain because there is limited data on the effects of CO2 on the geomechanical properties of the rocks. Through performing experiments to quantify the physical and chemical changes that occur, a new model will be developed that can account for the interactions between the flow and mechanical response. This model will be used to study the response of reservoirs during CO2 sequestration and to provide guidance on optimum injection and storage strategies.

Advanced Condition Assessment and Failure Prediction Technologies for Optimal Management of Critical Pipes ("Critical Pipes").

X-ray Microscopy Facility for Imaging Geo-materials.

Recent developments in laboratory based X-ray microscopy have enabled micro-scale investigations of geo-materials under relevant loading conditions. Detailed understanding of the micro-structure, 3-D pore connectivity and chemical composition of materials is required to effectively solve many geotechnical engineering problems. Engineers and scientists from seven leading Australian universities are proposing a new X-ray microscopy facility for imaging geo-materials (XMFIG). The XMFIG will enable the study of internal micro-structures and chemical composition of geo-materials as encountered in, for example, soft ground improvement, cement science, geological sequestration of CO2, and land-fill barrier design.

Responding to Climate Change Effects on Geo-Infrastructure - Quantification of risks and development of adaptation/mitigation technologies.

Advanced Testing Facility for Geological Sequestration of Greenhouse Gases.

A facility for the analysis of geological materials and their geo-thermal-mechanical interactions with complex fluids (such as carbon dioxide CO2, water, methane) is required to support a large number of research projects in high priority areas including geological sequestration of greenhouse gases and oil/gas recovery at three different leading Universities. The unique features of the proposed facility are that it is capable of analysis large samples, under multiple forms of loading and over a range of high pressures and temperatures. This will enable us to do proper design, management, and optimisation of subsurface CO2 sequestration operations for safe storage of CO2 in geological formations.

Stabilization of railway subgrade by lime-flyash slurry injection.

The rail network in Australia provides a major transport route for commuters as well as transportation of goods. The subgrade of railway track should provide adequate support for the overlying ballast and capping layers. Hence, a poor subgrade always results in track problems associated with uneven track, fouled ballast, and misalignment of the track. This project will investigate in detail the fundamental mechanisms and key parameters involved in the improvement of subgrade soil by injecting lime-flyash slurry. This project will develop an improved design procedure for lime-flyash slurry injection in the field based on experimental and numerical modelling.

Stress-strain and Filtration Characteristics of Sub-ballast for Optimising Stability of Track and Minimisation of Ballast Fouling under Cyclic Loading.

Influence of scale effect on the strength of rock mass for the better prediction of slope stability in large open-cut mines.

The research project will concentrate primarily on understanding the mechanisms of slope failure in large and deep open cut mines with the goal of developing improved assessment criteria for designing rock slopes. Mechanisms governing shape, location and propagation of slope failure surfaces are highly dependent on insitu and induced stresses, strength of rock mass, and induced pore water pressure. Accurate determination of rock mass strength and their use in slope stability analysis will enable mining engineers to develop improved slope design methodologies which will enable them to enhance the safety of the mine workers and to reduce lost time and increase the production.
