Lifting the Veil on Turbulent Convective Heat Transfer over Rough Surfaces.
The aims of this research are to improve the understanding of the process by which heat is transferred between a
rough surface and the flow across it, via the development and application of a novel experimental technique for
the combined measurement of 3D temperature and 3D velocity fields. Understanding the effects of surface
roughness will have a significant impact on energy generation and transportation where the surface roughness
that results from extended operation of gas and stream turbines can significantly increase the heating of their
surfaces, increasing fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing operational life. This research
aims to provide important insight into the role of roughness in convective heat transfer.
