Prof Currie is a renowned international Public Transport research leader and policy advisor with over 30 years experience.  He has published more research papers in leading international peer research journals in this field than any other researcher in the world.  He is founder and Director of the Public Transport Research Group at Monash University which was identified as the 3rd top academic research group in the world in an European independent review of the field in 2015.  In 2016 Professor Currie won both the best paper in the 14th World Conference on Transport Research in Shanghai and the best paper in the 95th Annual Meeting of the Transport Research Board in Washington DC, the largest transport conference in the world.  Professor also won the TRB paper award in 2012 and is the only person to ever win it twice.

Professor Currie is founder of the ‘World Transit Research’ clearinghouse (www.worldtransitresearch.info)  which has consolidated all research in this field into a single accessible source and is now used by over 8,000 towns and cities in over 170 countries worldwide.

Professor Currie has worked for some of the worlds leading Public Transport Operators including London Transport, and he has managed numerous Public Transport research and development projects internationally. Prof  Curries experience spans Project Management, Demand Forecasting, Planning Methods in Public Transport, Regulatory Reviews, Efficiency and Performance Benchmarking, Training, Market Research, Investment Appraisal and Financial and Economic Analysis.   Graham is also a specialist advisor to international agencies on planning transport special events and has worked on all the summer Olympic Games since 1996 and the Hajj pilgrimage in Mekka.  Graham is also employed by international consultants Strategy& PwC as a specialist in public transport but is also employed at Monash University as one of the worlds first Professors in Public Transport.  In this role he aims to develop knowledge and training for the public transport profession on a national and international basis.

Optimising the design and implementation of public transport priority initiatives

Most Australians live in growing capital cities which are significant drivers of the national economy. Traffic congestion deteriorates urban liveability, increases environmental emissions & costs the economy $10Bp.a. in wasted resources. Public transport can be an efficient solution to urban transport however in Australia this mostly involves buses sharing road space in congested traffic. Traffic priority measures assisting on-road public transport is growing internationally however methods to design solutions are weak. This project brings together world researchers in an interdisciplinary project to optimise design of priority measures. Knowledge developed will improve social, environmental and economic outcomes for urban Australia.

Innovative urban traffic congestion solutions: Optimising Roadspace Using Networks of Multi-Class Priority Lanes

Australia is a highly urbanised nation with 64% of its population living in capital cities. As urban populations continue to grow, traffic congestion is expected to more than double by 2020 with the costs of congestion are expected to reach $20.4 billion.
This work develop a new methodology to enable planners to find globally optimal road space priority choices across the network for the introduction of multi-class priority lanes, considering public transport, freight and high occupancy vehicle traffic. These are the choices which best accommodate a city’s transport demands on its road network and hence effectively reduce traffic congestion. Knowledge developed will improve social, environmental and economic outcomes for urban Australia.

Innovative tools to improve station design and management of crowds in emergency and panic conditions

Australia is one of the most urbanised countries in the world and majority of Australians live in rapidly growing capital cities. Pedestrian crowd safety is an important matter as there have been numerous incidents in which crowd panic has resulted in severe injuries and death. This project will study crowd dynamic at major public transport hubs under panic situations. This work will enable the development of a modelling tool designed for panic situations which can be used in the planning, design, and management of major pubic transport hubs. The tool can also be used in a wide range of applications such as designing of major infrastructures, assisting disaster relief agencies and police wherever crowd movement is a central concern.

Investigating Transport Disadvantage, Social Exclusion and Well Being in Metropolitan, Regional and Rural Victoria

Urban sprawl and sparse rural living are pervasive in Australia. Travel is thus a big yet essential part of Australian life. When transport is scarce, access to activities is hard and life prospects inhibited. This problem is growing as fuel costs rise, the population ages and fringe/coast migration continues. Internationally transport disadvantage and social exclusion links are now a major study field, however Australian research is limited despite these pervasive and growing problems. This gap is filled using top world researchers in the field to investigate how transport problems impact on life opportunities and community well being. Knowledge developed will better focus Australias approach to this significant growing problem.
