Dr. Wenxin Mao is a Senior Lecturer and Director of International Education within the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Monash University. He earned his PhD from Monash University in 2019. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Mao was a Royal Society Newton International Fellow and Senior Research Associate in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge. His distinguished research background also includes an Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics (ACAP) Fellowship and a tenure as a Research Fellow with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science at Monash University.

Semiconductor devices underpin much of modern life, yet their fabrication ultimately depends on a single core capability: creating precise, local variations in chemical composition. Dr Mao’s research at Monash will focus on developing new ways to make and understand hybrid semiconducting materials by combining autonomous fabrication with advanced, correlated characterizations—so that we can rapidly connect structure → properties → performance in real devices.
Key areas of interest include:
- Multimodal, correlated characterisation: Using advanced characterization techniques to reveal mechanistic insights across length scales and build robust structure–property–application relationships.
- Optoelectronic devices and applications: Translating materials advances into technologies for solar energy conversion, lighting, and photon sensing.
- Autonomous, high-throughput fabrication: Developing new hybrid crystalline semiconductors via fully automated, high-throughput fabrication and screening to speed up discovery and optimisation, and to enable scalable functionalisation for targeted device applications.
