The Faculty of IT allocates designated funding to each of the Faculty’s currently enrolled Graduate Research Students (PhD and MPhil) to support your candidature. These funds can be used for; Travel, Fieldwork and data collection, Specialised training and Specialised equipment to support research being conducted as part of your candidature.
Applications to use this funding must be submitted 6 weeks in advance. If you have accessed this funding previously you must first check if you have adequate funds remaining. These funds cannot be committed (i.e. used) until the expenditure is;

If you wish to access funding for travel but do not meet all the eligibility criteria; and if the purpose of the expenditure is supported by your supervisor/s you can, with their support, make a case to have your application considered.
NOTE: University policy requires reimbursements to be claimed within six months of the transaction and within the same calendar year.
1.4.1 Travel – to be used to support the costs of travel (including fares, accommodation and conference registration) for graduate research students who are travelling interstate or overseas in order to present papers at a conference, collect data or undertake other activities relevant to their research.
PLEASE NOTE: When planning to utilise the FIT Candidature Funds for Travel purposes and you are also applying for funding for a Monash University Graduate Education Postgraduate Travel Grant you are required to contribute a designated amount of your FIT Candidature Funding. For example:
if you are applying for a maximum central grant of $1175 you must also contribut $940 from your FIT funding.

1.4.2 Fieldwork and data collection – Funds can be used to undertake fieldwork, surveys, data collection, interviews etc. Refer to the Eligibility criteria.
1.4.3 Specialised training – Funds can be used to support the costs of specialised training crucial to undertaking your research. Refer to the Eligibility criteria.
1.4.4 Specialised equipment – Funds can be used to support the costs of specialised equipment crucial to undertaking your research. Refer to the Eligibility criteria
1.4.5 Hardship funding – Students experiencing financial hardship which is jeopardising their ability to continue with or complete their candidature may be eligible for assistance. Please refer to your Graduate Research Student Services Coordinator in the first instance.
Please note, as per Monash Corporate Credit Card and Reimbursement Policy & Procedure (PDF, 0.11 MB) that it is against policy to purchase any IT equipment over $300.00 AUD in value. All such requests for items like these are to be directed to fit-operations@monash.edu.
The cost of any additional equipment such as personal IT equipment or home office furniture, required to set up a working space at home are personal expenses. The university will not provide reimbursement to you for these items, see Working from home Procedure (PDF, 0.16 MB).
The purpose of the Quality Conference Travel Fund (QCTF) is to increase the quality of the Faculty of Information Technology’s (FIT’s) graduate research outcomes and publications. The QCTF provides discretionary funding to individual GR students once they have expended the Monash Postgraduate Travel Fund and FIT Graduate Research Candidature Funding Scheme allocations.

Please note: Following the introduction of QCTF, the Supplementary Funding Scheme (SFS) will no longer be available for conference travel.
The purpose of the FIT PhD Supplementary Funding Scheme (SFS) is to support better quality outcomes and timely completions. The SFS provides discretionary funding once the University Post Graduate Travel Fund and FIT Graduate Research Candidature Funding Schemefunds are expended. Applications for funding between $1,000 and $5,000 will be considered. When requesting supplementary funding applicants will need to justify their request by providing details of how it will support better quality outcomes and timely completion. Successful applicants are required to report on how they used the SFS to add-value to the quality of their thesis and ensure timely completion.

Applications for Supplementary Funding can only be made once the University’s Postgraduate Travel Fund and the FIT Research Student Candidature Funding Scheme are exhausted.

The Monash Graduate Research Office Postgraduate Travel Grant makes a contribution to support the costs of travel for graduate research students who are travelling interstate or overseas in order to present papers at a conference, collect data or undertake other activities relevant to their research. These travel grants are available to assist with the travelling expenses (airfares). The amount available as part of the grant differs depending on the applicant’s interstate or international destination. Students can apply as many times as it takes to reach the nominated ceiling amount of $1175 however note no candidate will receive more than this amount.

The Postgraduate Publications Award (PPA) provides support for high-achieving students who, having submitted their thesis, wish to write up some of their research for publication while they await the result of their examination. Stipend support, equivalent to the Australian Postgraduate Award rate, is available for a period of up to eight weeks.

Established and managed by the Monash Postgraduate Association (MPA) the Seminar and Conference Funding scheme is divided up into four different areas, students cans select the one that fits their event:
Seminar Organiser Funding: For postgrads who want to put on a short seminar to showcase departmental work, invite a guest speaker, or host a networking event.
Conference Organiser Funding: For postgrads who are organising their departmental research conference.
Departmental Group Funding: For student groups within a department, to run social events throughout the year for their cohort.
Special Interest Group Funding: For coursework students who want to engage with other students in their course and organise a social event, or for any postgrad wishing to run a special interest group event.
