Project showcases

A Stitch in Time: Creating novel access points to Australia's Convict Records with data embroidery

Presented by Dr Monika Schwarz

Drawing from records of Van Diemen’s Land held by the British Bureaucracy, this project uses ‘data embroidery’ to tell the stories of real female convicts – focusing on resilience and resourcefulness. Explore their lives through these artistic historical archives brought to life with needlecraft and embroidery.

Archives, records and Accounts: Visualising the Royal Capital of Medieval Angkor

Presented by Dr Tom Chandler

A virtual heritage journey, this simulation project visualises a day in 12 century Angkor and its people. Guided by AI, they demonstrate different agendas allowing viewers to not only explore the landscape of this medieval city, but also how the diverse residents lived their lives.

Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Living Archives on Country: Recordkeeping Frameworks, Protocols and Models for Transformative Participatory Practice

Presented by Emerita Professor Sue McKemmish and Dr Narissa Timbery

The Communique on Indigenous Data Sovereignty, Maiam nayri Wingara 2018, addresses all individuals and entities involved in the creation, collection, access, analysis, interpretation, management, dissemination and reuse of data and data infrastructure in Australia. It refers broadly to data, records, information or knowledge, in any format or medium, which is about and may affect Indigenous peoples collectively and individually. It asserts the right of First Nations peoples to exercise ownership, autonomy and governance over their data so defined. In partnership with First Nations Elders, communities and organisations, we will co-design frameworks, models, protocols and systems to support Data Sovereignty, Living Archives and Repatriation of archives and cultural materials back to Country where they belong.
