How IBL works

For more than 30 years our IT IBL program has been pivotal in preparing our undergraduate students for their careers. In fact, many placements result in job offers before graduation!

If you’re interested in IBL, here’s where you can get all the information you need about the program.

Eligibility for IBL

Any undergraduate student (domestic or international) enrolled in one of the following degrees can apply for IBL when applications open.

Double degree students can also apply provided they’re studying one of the IT courses listed below.

Degree When to apply
Bachelor of Information Technology End of first year
Bachelor of Computer Science End of first year
Bachelor of Computer Science (Advanced) End of first year
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Software Engineering End of second year
Double degrees with IT End of second year

Prerequisites for IBL

While you are on placement, you will be enrolled in one of the IBL units FIT3045 or FIT4042.

To be enrolled, it’s imperative you fulfil the relevant unit prerequisites accessible through the handbook via one of the links above.

You must also satisfy the following criteria by the time you reach your placement, as well as pass the admission interviews listed in the next section:

  • Accrue at least 72 credit points of study towards an IT bachelor’s degree, including at least 60 points of FIT-coded units  (48 for Software Engineers).
    • Student taking Computer Science and Software Engineering degrees can include specific MAT-coded units in their FIT coded unit totals.
  • Complete FIT2108 Industry-based Learning seminar (only offered in semester one).
  • Possess a rounded WAM of at least 70 immediately before the selection interviews, placement interviews and the placement itself.
  • Be studying full-time for the two semesters preceding a placement (at least three units per semester).
  • Have a free semester in your course map for the placement.
  • Have completed at least three semesters of your degree (four for double degrees).

Your placement can’t be done in semester two if it or the succeeding summer semester is your final semester. Extending your degree to circumvent this condition is not allowed and this criterion does not apply to students entering Monash in semester one via Monash College.

For more details on above mentioned criteria and the order they are usually met, read through the IBL Information Session slides at the bottom of this page.

Admission into the program

After meeting the prerequisites for IBL, you must undergo a two-stage interview process for admission into the program..

1. Entry interviews (Not applicable to applications in 2024)

Entry interviews are conducted for students who meet the eligibility criteria at the end of semester one (held in November), and semester two (held in February the following year).

Assessments are based on factors such as:

  • communication
  • maturity
  • enthusiasm and initiative
  • leadership qualities
  • extracurricular activities and participation
  • academic performance
  • career interests
  • personal employment history.

2. Placement interviews

Students who succeed in the selection interviews then undergo placement interviews with a panel consisting of industry partners during one or both mid-semester breaks. These are used to help place students with an organisation and therefore must be attended at the time nominated by the Faculty.

Note that placements are not guaranteed and availability may fluctuate.

How to apply

To apply for the program you must complete an online application.

Industry placements and grants

In IBL, you’ll be placed with one of our industry partners full-time where you’ll undertake graduate-level roles in areas such as business analytics, IT consulting, information security, software development and project management.

A grant per placement is available to Australian and international students who undertake IBL and are enrolled full-time in any of our IT single undergraduate degrees (and most double degrees) at Clayton campus.

Assessment and credit

Speak to an IT course adviser when planning for IBL.

Depending on the credit points your placement is worth, you may be required to undertake a summer unit before IBL so you can finish your degree on time. No other units can be undertaken while you’re on placement.

Because IBL forms an integral part of your degree, they’re formally assessed and credited.

Each placement is worth a number of units in your degree, and throughout your placement you’re supported by Monash academics who visit you and your industry supervisor to discuss your progress and achievements.
