Global expert on constraint programming joins Monash University

Monash University welcomes world-renowned expert in constraint programming Professor Peter Stuckey to the Faculty of Information Technology.

Monash University welcomes world-renowned expert in constraint programming Professor Peter Stuckey to the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT).

Professor Peter Stuckey joins FIT to work alongside some of Australia’s leading data scientists to research and develop next-generation technology to help solve some of the worlds complex optimisation problems.

Before joining FIT, he was Professor at The University of Melbourne (UoM) in the School of Computing and Information Systems, Project Leader at NICTA Victoria Research Laboratory UoM, and held a similar role at CSIRO’s Data61.

His pioneering work includes the development of the semantics for one of the earliest systems in constraint programming to co-authoring one of the first constraint logic programming systems CLP(R). He also wrote the first textbook on constraint programming, Programming with Constraints: An Introduction (MIT Press, 1998).

He has worked on many optimisation problems, including port scheduling, carpet cutting, and rail capacity planning, and worked with large companies such as Rio Tinto and Oracle.  Professor Stuckey also lead the G12 project a NICTA, developing a software platform designed to solve large-scale industrial combinatorial optimisation problems, which lead to the Opturion spinoff.

In 2010 Professor Stuckey was awarded the Google Australia Eureka Prize for Innovation in Computer Science and the 2010 University of Melbourne Woodward Medal for Science and Technology for best publications in Science and Technology across the university. In 2009 he was recognised as an ACM Distinguished Scientist.

Professor Stuckey received his Bachelor degree and PhD both in Computer Science from Monash University in 1985 and 1988 respectively.

While his research focuses on discrete optimisation , programming languages, bioinformatics, he has made substantial contributions to other areas such as security and constraint-based graphics.

Professor Stuckey’s expertise will be invaluable for advancing research in constraint programming and teaching excellence in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash.
