Celebrating 10 Years of VIEWS

This week, Monash Engineering welcomed Year 11 and 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to campus as part of the 2026 Victorian Indigenous Engineering Winter School (VIEWS).

This year marks the program's 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of inspiring young Indigenous students to explore careers in engineering and STEM. As one of four partner universities, Monash University was delighted to host a full day of hands-on activities, presentations and engineering experiences.

The day began with an opening address from Professor Yiannis Ventikos, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Clint Hansen (PhD), a proud Yiman/Iman Countryman and Research Fellow with Monash Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, then shared his personal and professional journey into engineering and research founded on Indigenous Knowledge Systems.

Across the day, students participated in activities led by Monash Engineering Student Teams. This included Monash Automation's Prosthetic Design Challenge and 3D Printing Workshop exploring the engineering principles behind prosthetic limbs through real-world medical case studies; building and racing model lunar rovers with Monash Nova Rover; and designing and launching small-scale "bottle rockets" with the Monash High Powered Rocketry (HPR) team.

VIEWS provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with the opportunity to experience university life, discover the breadth of engineering careers, and connect with academics, researchers and students. Monash is proud to support this important initiative and help inspire the next generation of Indigenous engineers and innovators.
