New book offers roadmap for resilient pipeline systems

A new publication is addressing one of the most overlooked pillars of modern infrastructure: ageing water pipelines.
"Renewal Assessment of Deteriorated Water Pipelines," led by Professor Jayantha Kodikara of Monash Civil and Environmental Engineering, brings together international experts from academia and industry to address the growing global challenge of pipeline deterioration and renewal. It addresses:
- deterioration in metallic, cementitious and polymeric pipes
- condition assessment using traditional and emerging techniques
- deterministic, probabilistic and data-driven failure analysis
- renewal and rehabilitation strategies, including trenchless technologies
- practical case studies for long-term asset planning
Drawing on more than a decade of collaboration - supported by institutions such as Monash University and industry partners including Sydney Water, The Water Research Foundation (WRF), and UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) - the work bridges the gap between research and real-world application.
It also builds on major collaborative initiatives like the Critical Pipes Project and the CRC-P on Smart Linings for Pipe Infrastructure along with the Monash Pipe Evaluation Platform housed at Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) and developed through CRC-P.
Of the book, Professor Kodikara says "I hope this book contributes, even in a small way, to better decision-making for resilient and cost-effective water infrastructure."
