Monash Engineering and the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Peter Dransfield.

A foundational figure in control systems engineering at Monash University, Professor Dransfield is remembered for his enduring contribution to teaching, research and the development of modern automation engineering in Australia.

His distinguished early career spanned 16 years in industry and seven years in academia in the United Kingdom and United States. He joined Monash University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering in late 1968. Recruited to establish expertise in control systems and automation, he went on to build one of the University’s most influential teaching and research programs.

At a time when mechanical engineering was still emerging, Professor Dransfield was instrumental in introducing and developing undergraduate and graduate subjects in control systems. He established third- and fourth-year courses, along with a suite of graduate-level subjects that became central to the department’s curriculum.

His commitment to hands-on, industry-connected learning was reflected in his role in initiating “Authentic Involvement in Design” final-year projects. This strengthened ties between students and industry and became a defining feature of the engineering program.

A pioneer in laboratory development, Professor Dransfield founded and expanded the Department’s Control and Automation Laboratory, championing the early adoption of computer-based tools for dynamic analysis of control systems. He also contributed to professional education through short courses for practising engineers.
