Aung is a third-year Ph.D. candidate at Monash University, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, contributing to the ARC Discovery Project, “Lost Mines: The Troubled Legacies of Former Mining Landscapes”. Under the supervision of Dr. Anna Lintern and Dr. Fiona Tang, this research investigates the impact of historic gold mining on mercury contamination in Victorian rivers. The project aims to develop a comprehensive hydrological and water quality model to quantify the influence of legacy gold mines on mercury levels across  impacted river systems. This work is part of a multidisciplinary collaboration involving archaeologists, environmental historians, and biogeochemists from La Trobe University and the Australian National University, addressing the complex environmental legacies of Australia’s mining history.
