Fae is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Monash University, where she leads the Biomedical Signal Processing Lab (BSPL). She joined Monash University in June 2016 following completion of her PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne, supported by the Australian Government’s International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) and Australian Postgraduate Award (APA). During her PhD, she received numerous honours including the Len Stevens Scholarship, the IEEE Australia Council Student Paper Award in 2014, and Open Finalist Award in the Student Paper Competition at the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference (EMBC) 2014 in Chicago.
Fae’s research aims to reduce health inequity by developing affordable, AI-powered healthcare technologies for maternal, fetal, neonatal and child health. Her work combines biomedical signal processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, physiological sensing, and low-cost medical devices to enable high-quality healthcare in resource-constrained settings. She has pioneered innovative technologies for fetal monitoring, neonatal cardiorespiratory and bowel health assessment, breastfeeding monitoring, and digital health, with strong emphasis on translation into clinical practice and global health impact.
Her research has attracted national and international recognition. She is the recipient of the Victorian Government Veski Victoria Fellowship (2021), the B&T Women Leading Tech Award (Education & Research, 2022), the Dean’s Award for Honours Supervision (2022), the Women in AI Asia-Pacific Award for Research Excellence (2024), and the Dean’s Award for Research Excellence by an Early Career Researcher (2024). Earlier in her career, she also received the Mortara Fellowship (2017) and Honourable Mention for the Rosanna Degani Young Investigator Award from Computing in Cardiology ( both in 2015 and 2016).
Fae collaborates extensively with clinicians, engineers, public health researchers and industry partners across Australia, the United States, Asia and Europe. Her work has been supported by major national and international funding from the NIH, NHMRC and ARC.
Her research interests include artificial intelligence in healthcare, biomedical signal processing, physiological sensing, affordable medical technologies, digital health, wearable sensors, maternal, fetal and neonatal health, and technologies that advance global health equity.
