Pathways into Engineering
Detailed below are the pathway options for domestic students interested in admission to the BE(Hons):
1. Monash College Diploma of Engineering
The Monash College diploma program offers a pathway to the second year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree at Monash University for successful students.
Your pathway to University?
If you didn’t meet the requirements for direct entry into Monash Engineering, the Monash College diploma program could be the ideal pathway. The program offers you guaranteed entry into the second year of our Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) when you successfully complete the diploma with the required scores.
Bridging school and university
Many students - whether they're from Australia or other countries, and regardless of their backgrounds, find that undertaking a Monash College diploma is the ideal bridge between school and university, as it makes the transition as smooth and simple as possible.
Monash College ensures that students can meet all the challenges of an engineering degree at Monash University.
For this reason, Monash College entry requirements are set higher than those of other bridging programs (although they are still slightly lower than the direct entry requirements for Monash University), with the results indicating Monash College students consistently performing well in their degrees.
How does it work?
Monash College offers the Diploma of Engineering Studies, Parts 1 and 2. This is a fee-paying program, taught on the Monash College Campus.
- Part 1 is equivalent to Year 12.
- Part 2 is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree.
International students who complete Part 1 may be eligible for entry into the first year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree at Monash University. Students who complete Part 2 with the required scores are guaranteed entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree at Monash University.
Domestic students will usually require a minimum 60% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of one full-time year of bachelor level study (including the Monash College Diploma Part 2) must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements. All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.
Because Monash College operates three study semesters a year, and has small classes with strong tutorial support, it is possible to complete Parts 1 and 2 within 20 months.
If you qualify for entry directly into Part 2, you'll be able to can complete your diploma in 12 months.

2. Transfer from another Monash course or another Australian institution
To be eligible for a course transfer you must meet all of the following criteria:
- Have completed the specified minimum number of bachelor level credit points
- Be a current student who will be continuing their program of study and you have a minimum of 24 credit points left to complete (in other words, you have not completed your current degree)
- Have met the prerequisites for the course to which you wish to transfer
- Have met the minimum average required to be considered for transfer (consideration does not guarantee an offer).
Your full academic history will be taken into consideration.
3. Single units of study – Monash (non-award)
Satisfactory completion of at least two units at university level can satisfy the minimum requirements for entry. However, to be considered for entry into engineering you'll need to complete at least eight university level subjects covering pre-requisite requirements and aim for an overall minimum average as outlined on the faculty's transfer webpage. Meeting the minimum average does not guarantee a place in the course.
Prerequisite single units
- MTH1010 Functions and their applications (equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 Maths Methods) or ENG1090 Foundation Maths (equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 Specialist Maths)
- PHS1001 Foundation physics (equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 Physics).
- English - Completion of an ‘English rich’ unit may also be required in order to meet English Language requirements.
- Single units incur full-fees as single units of study are not eligible for HECS-Help. Relevant single units of study may also be available for study at another university (full-fee paying).
4. Open Universities Australia (OUA)
OUA offers online studies in a range of disciplines with suitable prerequisite subjects in maths, physics, chemistry and English. You'll need to:
- Have completed the specified minimum number of bachelor level credit points
- Have met the prerequisites for the course to which you wish to transfer. Information on how to meet our maths, physics and chemistry prerequisites is available online. English can be met via successful completion of PHIX1037 Critical Thinking.
- Have met the minimum average required to be considered for transfer (consideration does not guarantee an offer).
5. Associate degree
To be eligible for admission to the single BE(Hons) you must meet the following criteria:
- Have completed a two year Associate degree in an engineering discipline from an Australian university
- Have a minimum 80% average across the completed Associate degree. Meeting the minimum average does not guarantee an offer
- Have met the prerequisites for the course.
TAFE studies
Due to the structure and depth of our engineering degree courses TAFE pathways are not available for Engineering at Monash and no credit is offered for completed TAFE diploma studies.
