Exploring the future of Quantum device engineering and applications

This week, Professor Malin Premaratne of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering co-chaired a Special Symposium on “Quantum Devices and Applications: From Engineering to Secure Networks” at the IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC) 2025.
Held in Singapore, Professor Premaratne co-chaired the Symposium alongside Professor Davide Bacco from the Università degli Studi di Firenze (University of Florence), Italy.
Of the Symposium, Professor Premaratne said "Our focus is on the quietly transformative quantum devices that already underpin modern life: semiconductor lasers, low-noise detectors and transistor-class components."
"We trace the path from device physics and quantum electrodynamics to deployable subsystems for secure optical networks, metrology and sensing with an emphasis on reliability, manufacturability, standards and supply-chain readiness," he says.
As part of the flagship annual meeting of the IEEE Photonics Society, IPC 2025 holds special significance, coinciding with the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, marking a century since the birth of quantum mechanics, one of the most transformative developments in modern science and engineering.
