From lab to real world - robotics in action
Congratulations to Dr Chao Chen, Dr Wesley Au and Dr Shao Liu on the publication of their new textbook, Robotics: From Theory to Practice (1st Edition).

The book provides a structured introduction to the fundamentals of robotics, covering key topics such as kinematics, dynamics, path planning, control, and programming.
It is designed to support a broad audience, from high school and university students to professionals seeking to apply classical robotics theory in practical settings. The content is presented across three parts, helping readers build knowledge progressively from foundational concepts to more advanced applications.
The authors bring strong expertise to this work:
- Dr Chao Chen is Director of the Monash Laboratory of Motion Generation and Analysis (LMGA), Academic Supervisor of the Monash Nova Rover Team, and former Course Director of Robotics and Mechatronics. His work has been recognised through awards, including the 2023 Engineers Australia (Victoria) Excellence Award for his harvesting robot project.
- Dr Wesley Au is a Robotics and Automation Research Engineer at Boeing Research and Technology Australia, with experience in automation and intelligent path planning for aerospace manufacturing.
- Dr Shao Liu is a Research Fellow at LMGA with expertise in robotic design and modelling and experience across medical, manufacturing, and specialised robotics projects.
This is a comprehensive edition for those looking to better understand the connection between robotics theory and practice.
