New workshop to elevate Australia’s rail research capability

IRT Workshop

The Monash Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) has celebrated the opening of its new railway manufacturing workshop in Melbourne. The facility will equip researchers with advanced tools including a large three-axis CNC machine, a precision welding table and laser-cutting grinders to support cutting-edge rail research and fabrication.

Professor Ravi Ravitharan Director at IRT (pictured right), emphasised the workshop’s significance, noting “This facility will empower researchers to bridge the gap between theoretical research and hands-on manufacturing.” He also highlighted how it would support collaborative projects between industry and academia.

The workshop is designed to enhance capability across testing, prototyping and analysis, providing a hub where students, researchers and partners can work together on practical solutions for rail infrastructure and technology challenges.
