The complex, compelling case for high-speed rail

High-speed rail has long been viewed as a nation-building ambition for Australia, but with the Sydney-Newcastle project now progressing through development, experts say the conditions may finally be right to turn decades of planning into reality.

Speaking with Charis Chang of Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia News, Professor Ravi Ravitharan, Director of the Monash Institute of Railway Technology (IRT), said the benefits extend well beyond faster journeys.

"We are talking about carbon emissions, we are talking about a fuel crisis, we are talking about sovereign capability, we are talking about growth, we are talking about housing. All of these stack up with high-speed rail."

Professor Ravitharan also highlighted the importance of taking a staged approach to build momentum and public confidence, saying "I think it's a great time to build it. If you don't build it, I think the cost will be much higher."

As Australia considers one of its most significant transport infrastructure investments, research and engineering expertise will play a critical role in shaping a high-speed rail network that is resilient, sustainable and fit for future generations.
