Australia’s critical minerals in focus

This week, Professor Yiannis Ventikos, Dean at Monash Engineering attended "Australian Critical Minerals: Strategic Supply for a Changing World", a luncheon presented by AmCham Australia.

He joined industry leaders Vanessa Bullock (Macquarie Capital), David Christensen (Renascor Resources), Mark Saxon (ACDC Metals) and David Grabau (Cobalt Blue Holdings) in a panel discussion about the opportunities and challenges shaping Australia’s critical minerals future.

The panel agreed that while Australia’s critical mineral reserves are a genuine strategic asset, success will require coordinated action across government, regulators, investors, industry, academia and communities.

Professor Ventikos noted that developing self-reliance, and by extension national sovereignty, in more phases of the critical minerals supply chain - from extraction, to multiple processing and separation stages, to final products - is a high economic value opportunity for Australia, where innovation can play a major role.

He was accompanied by Monash University colleagues including internationally renowned critical minerals, strategic resources and materials science experts Professors Mohan Yellishetty, Sankar Bhattacharya, Matthew Hill and Mainak Majumder.
