Honouring a once-in-a-century scientific discovery

Monash Engineering has celebrated the extraordinary achievements of Professor Jianfeng Nie, whose landmark paper, Strain-induced fully coherent triphase nanoarchitecture in refractory high-entropy alloys, has been published in Science.
The research demonstrates how lower temperatures and slower heating processes can precisely control atomic organisation during manufacturing, producing an alloy with exceptional strength and stability.
The new material is twice the strength of steel, three times stronger than aluminium, and around twice as strong as the same alloy produced using conventional methods.
When asked about his incredible discovery, Professor Jian-Feng replied "I decided to look where no one else was looking.”
The event brought together colleagues and distinguished guests including Professor Robyn Ward AM, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) and Senior Vice-President at Monash University; Monash Engineering's Adrian Neild, Professor and Deputy Dean; Professor Hai Vu, Deputy Dean Research; and Professor Matthew Hill, Head of Monash Materials Science and Engineering.
