A new international biomaterials research collaboration

Monash Engineering researchers will play a key role in a newly announced international research partnership to develop the next generation of innovative biomaterials.
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation has awarded funding for the Multidimensional Biomaterials ([MB]²) International Research Training Group (IRTG), led by the University of Bayreuth.
The five-year initiative brings together researchers from Monash University, the University of Melbourne, Swinburne University of Technology and CSIRO to accelerate the development of multifunctional biomaterials while training a new generation of internationally connected interdisciplinary researchers.
Representing Monash University are Professor Jess Frith, Professor Laurence Meagher and Associate Professor Kristian Kempe from Monash Materials Science and Engineering, together with Professor Nicolas Voelcker, Scientific Director of the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication and Professor at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Associate Professor Kristian Kempe, [MB]² steering committee member, says "The collaboration really builds strongly on the complimentary capability and experience of Monash University Principal Investigators in the areas of tunable stealth materials, controlled release systems for wound healing, biosensing hydrogels and mechano-biological materials.
We are very excited to team up with our colleagues from the University of Bayreuth, the University of Melbourne, Swinburne University of Technology and CSIRO to develop multidimensional biomaterials and jointly train and supervise a new generation of biomaterials researchers."
The collaboration builds on longstanding partnerships between Australia and Germany and will combine expertise across materials science, chemistry, engineering, biology and medicine to create advanced biomaterials with broad clinical application potential, while strengthening international research and researcher mobility.
