Leap Australia lead workshop to enhance smart manufacturing
The Monash Smart Manufacturing Hub hosted industry partner Leap Australia for a training workshop for students and staff on how to build the Industrial Internet of Things and Augmented Reality applications using the Vuforia Studio and Thingworx software by PTC.
In this way, Monash University is reimagining what learning looks like by leveraging PTC solutions to prepare engineering students for the workforce, with a program designed to engage students with the advanced technologies widely used in the real world of industry.

Imran Muthaliph, application engineer from Leap Australia, demonstrated to students and staff the practical steps needed to navigate the ThingWorx user interface, create a Digital Twin (a real-time, interconnected, virtual copy of a real-world physical system or process that allows for system simulation, integration, testing, monitoring, optimisation and maintenance), manage live data and build an IoT mashup. He also outlined the Vuforia user interface, importing data and creating a user interface. “We are trying to take data, visualise data and look at how we can improve the data and interact better with the data,” he said.

Additionally, Dr Joanne Tanner from the Faculty of Engineering, was able to speak to the benefits and importance of these digitalisation technologies and how they will impact learning, in particular via the Student Pilot Plant. “We’re looking at improving student lab experiences to create a more authentic experience for our students which makes them industry ready,” she said.
Leap Australia will also support the IoT and Vuforia interface in the Digital Twin Labs in the Monash Smart Manufacturing Hub which will support industry innovation. “The Digital Twin Labs will allow us to support businesses to research, develop and test solutions virtually before investing in the physical robots and equipment.” explained Dr Yunlong Tang from the Faculty of Engineering.
“We look forward to hosting more events that bring together our industry partners with our students and researchers to collaborate on smart manufacturing ideas,” said Shankar Cumarasamy, from the Business Development team at the Monash Smart Manufacturing Hub.
