Grade point average (GPA)
The Grade Point Average (GPA) is an internationally recognised calculation used to find the average result of all grades achieved throughout your course.
For example, your grades might be a pass, credit, high distinction, distinction and so on. All grades, including fail grades and grades from any repeated units, are given a numerical value and then those values are averaged which gives you your GPA.
The GPA helps:
- tertiary providers compare your results with those of other students
- prospective employers interpret your results.
Your Monash GPA is calculated on a four point grading scale where 4.0 is the highest and 0.0 is the lowest achievement.
How to find out your GPA
We'll calculate your GPA for your award course if you started on or after semester one, 2008. We don't calculate the GPA for research master's and PhD courses.
- You can use our online calculator below to estimate your GPA.
- You can view your latest GPA in your unofficial academic record in the Web Enrolment System (WES) at any time. It will be calculated using the results from all of your completed semesters.
- Your GPA will also appear on your academic record (transcript). You’ll receive a free academic record when you graduate.
If you believe your GPA is incorrect, log into our virtual assistant and submit an enquiry and we’ll investigate it for you.
Converting your GPA
Other institutions in Australia and abroad can have different GPAs. For example, a seven point grading scale.
- If you have a GPA from another institution and you want to convert it to our four point scale, you can use our online calculator.
- If however you want to convert your Monash GPA to that of another institution, you’ll need to contact that institution for assistance. They may even have an online calculator on their website.
- If you’re applying for jobs in Malaysia and you need your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for your resume, you can request a letter which states your CGPA from Student Services in Malaysia or Monash Connect in Australia. For further details, see the Malaysia tab below.
If you want to convert your GPA to WAM, simply use our Weighted average mark (WAM) calculator.

Methodology
To calculate your GPA, we need to assign each grade a value. We use a 4.0 GPA scale.
Grade | GPA grade value |
---|---|
High distinction | 4.0 |
Distinction | 3.0 |
Credit | 2.0 |
Pass | 1.0 |
Near pass | 0.7 |
Fail | 0.3 |
Hurdle fail | 0.3 |
Withdrawn fail | 0.0 |
Grades not included in the calculation:
- SFR (satisfied faculty requirements)
- NE (not examinable)
- NAS (not assessed)
- WI (withdrawn incomplete)
- PGO (pass grade only)
- NPGO
- WNGO
GPA calculation formula
GPA = Σ (grade value x unit credit points) ÷ Σ unit credit points
Calculation steps
- Multiply each grade value by the unit credit points
- Sum the resulting values (weighted GPA unit score)
- Sum the unit credit points
- Divide the sum of the weighted GPA unit score by the sum of the unit credit points
- Calculate to three decimal places.
Example
Unit | Mark | Grade | Grade value | Unit credit points | Weighted GPA unit score |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
MON1001 | 63 | C | 2.0 | 6 | 12.0 |
MON1002 | 80 | HD | 4.0 | 12 | 48.0 |
MON1003 | 40 | N (fail) | 0.3 | 6 | 1.8 |
MON1004 | 85 | HD | 4.0 | 6 | 24.0 |
MON2001 | 96 | HD | 4.0 | 24 | 96.0 |
MON2002 | WN (withdrawn fail) | 0.0 | 6 | 0.0 | |
MON3001 | 52 | P | 1.0 | 6 | 6.0 |
MON3002 | 77 | D | 3.0 | 6 | 18.0 |
MON4001 | 82 | HD | 4.0 | 6 | 24.0 |
Total | 78 | 229.8 |
Final calculation:
GPA = 229.80 ÷ 78
GPA = 2.946
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)
The Cumulative Grade Point Average is a calculation used in Malaysia.
How to get your CGPA
As your CGPA doesn't appear on your academic record, you need to request a CGPA letter.
To request a CGPA letter, contact Student Services in Malaysia or Monash Connect in Australia. Once we have your payment, we'll produce the letter within one business day and mail it to your nominated address.
Delivery times are:
- within Australia – up to five University working days
- overseas – 10 to 15 University working days.
For the cost, see Student letters - standard format on our miscellaneous fees page.
The CGPA doesn't apply to any grade other than those listed in the table below. It's available to students who started a Monash University course on or after 1 January 2008.
