Failed, withheld and invalid units
After results release, the Web Enrolment System (WES) checks your unit enrolment. This takes up to three days.
If you failed a unit or a prerequisite unit, you should request course advice. Our course advisers can help you explore your options.
You may also be able to request feedback on your final assessment performance or view your assessment responses.
Sometimes, failing a unit can cause a unit for next semester to become invalid. If so, your faculty will send you an email telling you what you need to do to fix it.
To help you in the future, check out study skills – you’ll find a range of useful study skills and assessment preparation tips.
If your unit result has a WH (Withheld) grade (or is missing), it means your unit result hasn’t been finalised yet.
There are various reasons your grade may be withheld or missing:
- you have an extension to finish outstanding assessment tasks
- you haven’t finished all your assessments
- the host institution for your Study Abroad or complementary units hasn't yet submitted your results from your time overseas
- you have a pending academic misconduct investigation
- your assessment is still being marked and your final unit result will be updated shortly.
To find out more about your results, see results – reading your marks.
With the exception of those listed below, you should contact your Chief Examiner with questions about your results. To find their contact details, check the unit entry in the Monash Handbook.
- Law: submit an enquiry through MoVA
- Education (placement units): contact the Professional Practice Consultant (PPC) for your course.
Study Abroad units
If you have a copy of your official academic transcript from a partner institution, submit it to Monash Abroad to finalise your result. If you don't have a copy, check with Monash Abroad to see if they’ve received your transcript from the host university. They can tell you if it’s been sent to your faculty.
Complementary study at another institution
If you have a copy of your official academic transcript from a partner institution, submit an enquiry through MoVA with your transcript attached to finalise your result.
If you don't have a copy, check with your faculty if they've received and processed it by submitting an enquiry through MoVA.
WES will withdraw units and mark them as invalid if they don’t meet certain rules. If you have invalid units, we’ll notify you by email at your Monash account. Units become invalid if:
- you failed a unit that has prerequisites or corequisites
- you’ve enrolled in units that are incompatible (i.e. can’t be studied together).
Check WES after results release
It’s important to check and update your enrolment in WES to ensure you:
- remove all invalid units
- enrol in other units.

Failing a unit due to circumstances beyond your control
If you failed or withdrew from a unit due to circumstances beyond your control, you’ll need to apply for a Withdrawn (WDN) grade. When you’re assessed for a WDN grade, you’ll also be assessed for fee reversal.
